This Sunday, January 19, 2025, Dr. Karl Stegall will be our guest preacher. Dr. Stegall is a prominent figure within our Montgomery community and our Global Methodist Church.
Dr. Karl Stegall was a legend within the Alabama Methodist Church hierarchy. He was one of the best-known and most loved Methodist ministers to serve in Alabama over the past 50 years. Stegall distinguished himself at four separate Methodist churches in Alabama. He culminated his ministerial career as pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Montgomery, where he served as senior minister for 24 years.
In June 2022, Dr. Stegall courageously penned a statement revealing the truth about the UMC. His letter, though it faced criticism, was also met with widespread praise for his unwavering stance. Dr. Stegall's recent departure from the UMC, marked by dignity and grace, and his subsequent joining of the Global Methodist Church, is a testament to his courage and commitment. He now guides, mentors, and preaches throughout the Emerald Coast Conference and beyond.
Dr. Stegall's involvement in Montgomery Civic affairs is a testament to his commitment to the local community. He is known for his impeccable class and manners, and his melodious Black Belt southern accent is a delight to all who hear it. His love for sports and his deep knowledge of Alabama's history make him a beloved figure in the community. He has been a confidante and minister to many Alabama governors and Montgomery business leaders, further cementing his place in the local fabric.
Throughout the turmoil these last few years, Dr. Stegall shared these words, bringing us back to the main point: JESUS. He said, “One of my favorite hymns down through the years has been a hymn that Edward Mote, an English cabinetmaker, wrote. The words are so simple, yet true, for all of us who claim to be “Methodists”: My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name. On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand. Amen.”
