From The Pastor’s Desk
From the Pastor’s Desk…
The Apostle Paul is one of the most notable people in the whole Bible. Paul, formerly Saul, was also a major enemy of the early Church. He had a dramatic conversion on the road to Damascus. After Paul’s conversion, he became the leader in expanding the church's mission. How in the world can you go from enemy to leader in such a short time?
Three things happened to make this possible. First, Paul had a genuine conversion experience. He was not the same person after God transformed him. Second, his leadership ability was transformed from working against the church to working for the church! Third, one other ingredient was needed; Paul needed help. Even though Paul knew his conversion was genuine… the disciples were skeptical of Paul. Someone had to stand up for Paul… enter Barnabas. Barnabas welcomed Paul, and others followed his lead. The early church was never the same! The rest is history!
We could say… “If there had been no Barnabas, there would have been no Paul.” The two together provided a great model for us today. Transformation, leadership, and encouragement = growing a strong church. Most people quickly recognize we need conversion and leadership in the church. The other ingredient, encouragement, is just as valued. A spirit of encouragement brings out the best in people, while discouragement can bring out the worst.
Joyce Heatherley, in her book Balcony People, says there are two types of people: “balcony” and “basement.” A basement person sees the worst and drags people down. A balcony person is considered the best and lifts people up! Barnabas was a balcony person for Paul. He lifted Paul and affirmed him. His timely encouragement made an eternal difference. Today, the attitude of encouragement is still indispensable in reaching the world for Christ. Encouragement to walk with Christ is the very best we can offer!
Today, someone in our path needs a word of encouragement. Can we be a “Barnabas” for them? Our encouragement may make an eternal difference. Let us encourage one another to walk with Christ!
